Below is some advice about how to look after minor, self limiting illnesses, yourself. If you have any doubts or concerns, always ring the surgery for advice and our Triage doctor or nurse will be able to help.
Back Pain
Most back pain is self-limiting. Rest and appropriate painkillers will settle most cases in a few days. Gentle mobilisation helps rather than strict bed rest. If you have any numbness or bowel/bladder symptoms then please call for advice as soon as possible.
Coughs and colds
The majority of these are caused by viruses. Antibiotics do not kill viruses, and your body’s own defences are usually capable of destroying them with time. Ensuring good fluid intake and regular paracetamol help with the symptoms.
Diarrhoea and vomiting
These are usually caused by viruses. Avoid too much in the way of dairy products, and drink plenty of clear fluids. Most cases settle in a few days, but in babies and the elderly it can be more dangerous so for these groups—please ring for advice.
Earache
Earache is another common problem, especially in children. Paracetamol helps with the pain, but if it persists, or if there is any discharge please telephone for further advice.
Head lice and threadworms
Both of these problems are common in children. Your local pharmacist should be able to help with over-the-counter preparations which are effective at eradicating these problems.
Insect bites
Anti-histamines help with the redness and itching associated with bites, once again your local pharmacist will be able to advise you further. If the bite looks very red and the area affected is enlarging please call for advice.
Nosebleeds
If you are experiencing a nosebleed , squeeze just below the nasal bone firmly and bend your head FORWARDS. This promotes clot formation and the cessation of the bleed. If you are bleeding for greater than 20 minutes you should go to A+E.
